A Print on Demand Case Study in Creative Product Thinking

One of the ongoing challenges in a Print on Demand business is identifying product ideas and designs that truly work within the POD model. Since the blank products themselves are widely available and easily sourced by anyone, differentiation depends heavily on creativity, thoughtful design, and smart marketing.

Below is a brief case study from one of our recent projects.

While reviewing a supplier’s catalogue, we came across a portable travel jewelry case. At first glance, it did not feel relevant, as jewelry is not a product category we typically work with. However, approaching product development with a creative lens often means looking beyond the obvious use case. What we saw was not a jewelry case, but a practical solution for organizing small tools and accessories that tend to shift around inside a guitar case. From that insight, a repurposed product concept emerged using a commonly sourced item in an unexpected way.

A key value added element was personalization. Allowing customers to customize the cover panel with a name immediately elevated the product and made it far more compelling as a gift. This led to the next challenge, marketing. How do you communicate the value of this product in a way that resonates with the right audience?

Rather than focusing on guitar players themselves, we identified the core buyer as those who know and care about musicians, partners, friends, and family members looking for a gift that feels personal, useful, and thoughtful. With that audience in mind, we explored new AI driven video technology to produce user generated content style video ads featuring avatars. This approach allowed for fast, cost effective production while testing a newer format that advocates suggest can improve conversion rates.

As with any creative execution, success is not about technology, trends, or production polish alone. What matters most is how effectively the message connects with the audience and captures their attention.

The ad was launched on TikTok and generated over 11,000 views in less than two weeks. Shortly after launch, the product also began to gain traction on Etsy, showing early signs of consistent sales growth. It is a strong example of how rethinking product use and audience targeting can create meaningful momentum.

At CA14, we work closely with clients to explore ideas like this and bring them to market in thoughtful, strategic ways. If you are developing a product or exploring a new direction, we are always happy to talk. Feel free to reach out and share your story.
